What is susTANIable?
susTANIable is a social enterprise that was born from our journey in tackling food waste through innovative, practical solutions.
Starting from small-scale efforts using Black Soldier Fly (BSF) larvae at the household and residential levels, we grew through real experiences — from managing organic waste to empowering youth and communities.
At its heart, susTANIable stands for sustainability in tropical agriculture and food systems through: Research, Action, Collaboration, and Education (RACE).
We are here to turn small actions into big impacts.

Services
Consultancy and research
We provide expert research and consultancy to accelerate the shift toward sustainable tropical agri-food systems. Our team works with communities, institutions, and industry partners to design evidence-based strategies that reduce food waste, improve resource efficiency, and strengthen local food security.
Food waste management service
We design and implement innovative food-waste bioconversion solutions—such as Black Soldier Fly (BSF) larvae systems—to turn organic waste into valuable resources. Our service helps households, businesses, and institutions cut waste, lower emissions, and create circular, eco-friendly value chains.
Training and education
Through workshops, courses, and hands-on programs, we empower individuals and organizations to adopt sustainable practices. From youth groups to professional teams, our capacity-building initiatives share practical knowledge and inspire action for a more resilient food system.
Projects
Promoting and managing food waste
Indonesia faces a major challenge with organic waste, where one-third of food ends up discarded and drives greenhouse gas emissions. In Yogyakarta, the closure of the main landfill has intensified the waste crisis, even though the region is known as a youth-dominated education hub. Gadjah Mada University (UGM), the largest local university, struggles with an overcapacity central food-waste facility that does not cover all canteens and dormitories.
To address this, susTANIable promotes decentralized food-waste management through in-situ bioconversion in dorms and canteens, engaging the public and easing the central facility’s burden. This initiative, funded by Next Level Grant Facility (NLGF) and YSEALI Seed Grant, aims to foster a circular bioeconomy by reducing landfill waste, encouraging responsible consumption among youth, and producing high-quality organic fertilizer and animal feed.
Projects
Developing food waste bioconversion facility
Small-scale food-waste bioconversion—using bioponds or Black Soldier Fly (BSF) larvae containers—still demands intensive manual labor. Operators must distribute waste and mix it with larvae one by one, then separate harvest-ready larvae from their frass, an organic-fertilizer byproduct. Even attempts to stack bioponds vertically have not simplified the process, leaving fertilizer and animal-fodder production limited and discouraging wider public involvement.
To overcome these barriers, susTANIable developed **Airflown**, a low-cost, hassle-free bioconversion facility designed to simplify community-scale food-waste management and make it more scalable. This innovation, which reduces the labor and complexity of the process, earned recognition by winning the regional stage of the **Youth Climate Innovation (YCI) Asia Program**.
